Vicki and Geraldine are joined this week by Nick Poole, chief executive of the Chartered Institute for Library and Information Professionals, and chair of Wikimedia UK.
Discussion this week centres on media literacy and the role that libraries can play, both now and in the future. A future which is increasingly shaped by tools like search engines and tech like generative AI.
Libraries, Nick stresses, aren’t just depositories of information. They’re there to equip people with “the knowledge, the skills, the confidence [...] essentially, the agency,” to live well and to flourish in a hyperconnected society like ours.
On the topic of knowledge and skills, the group discuss whether we currently just pay lip service to the importance of being media literate. If so, they ask, how can we begin to move beyond the rhetoric?
Vicki and Geraldine also speak to Nick about the Online Safety Bill – including who the bill is actually going to serve best – industry, or the user?
